Those are the words Jamie Kaye lives and works by. Jamie runs Elm Energy Group, stationed on the idyllic Atlantic shores of Hilton Head, South Carolina and is Spray Foam Magazine’s 2025 Contractor of the Year Envelope Whisperer.

Insulation is their livelihood, but Jamie and his team regard building science as an art form, and spray foam is but one of many implements in their artists’ toolboxes. Despite being relatively new to the realm of spraying foam, Jamie was already well-versed in the medium before he ever picked up a spray gun himself. His mission statement is simple—eliminate spray foam underperformance by making verification testing an industry standard.

Jamie knows his stuff when it comes to foam installation. So much so, he has taught part of Profoam Corporation’s introductory SPF class and hasn’t been chased out in a hail of spitballs. Of course, expertise isn’t always measured in the number of rigs you own or sets you’ve sprayed. In Jamie’s case, his superpower is his sixth-sense about what can and does go wrong with the building’s envelope, and how to remedy it before it ever has a chance to fail. In other words, he whispers to the buildings, and the buildings whisper back.

Jamie’s envelope whispering powers might seem like magic to the uninitiated, but his secret is simply hard-earned experience mixed with an obsessive pursuit of details. Throughout his 15-year insulation career, he’s had the opportunity to get down and dirty, analyzing thousands of wonky spray foam jobs to determine what went wrong the first time and troubleshooting so the issue never reoccurs. Now, he applies what he’s learned to every spray foam job his company takes on. Their results are immaculate because their methods are solid.

Elm Energy never rushes through jobs, least of all when spray foam is involved. The secret sauce is their proprietary Air Seal Verification process. They use a blower-door-guided air sealing technique to check the building envelope for air leaks and potential moisture infiltration. Anything less than 1.5 ACH50 won’t do, and requires a touch-up and retest before ever calling the job “done.” Jamie’s high standards set a precedent for his team, who consistently deliver quality results the first time around. Refusing to compromise on quality has brought Elm Energy such an influx of spray foam jobs that Jamie plans to purchase a second rig in the upcoming year, and hopefully another next year—and another after that… and another…

His apparent ability to pinpoint air leaks with X-ray vision is a tried-and-true method any foam installer could add to their process—and he really hopes they do. Jamie would love nothing more than to see craftsmanship take precedent in the construction industry, starting with the stuff between the walls. He strives to continue championing the power of performance testing, and to replace visual inspections with stone cold validation, one leaky foamed building at a time.
